Correct me if I am wrong, but there is legislation that represents a contract saying if you work a certain amount in the United States, you certainly are entitled to Social Security and Medicare. It's not charity - it's the law. People do "earn" what they are "entitled" to under current legislation.

You can argue that the system should be different. But the social consensus behind these earn-and-be-entitled programs runs very, very deep. At best, you will get consensus on tweak ing the program to make the numbers work in the long run. Radical change is at least a generation away, if then.

This is one of those cases where I really think that philosophy is one thing while political reality is another, and a much more important factor to consider.

JMHO.

BTW, isn't it interesting that we will spend hundreds of thousands or millions to extend the life of a senior citizen a few years while homeless people under 65 can (and do) die on the streets in the thousands every year with little or no intervention in many cases?

It can be done. The welfare reform legislation of the mid-1990's is an example. It requires, however, political courage and a willingness to educate the public to counter the organized disinformation of special interests.
