Those of us who have witnessed it close at hand know how heartbreaking, and ultimately heartless, unintended results can be. I think this is an excellent example of judicial decisions of good intent having gone awry.

I get the impression that much of this is the unintended consequence of the success of drug treatments for mental illness. Many patients don't need to be hospitalized as long as they take their pills. When they don't take their pills, there's an opportunity to have them declared incompetent so they can be treated, but then as soon as they start taking their pills they're competent again. Big difference from the days of shock treatments and lobotomies, which require a residential facility.
