The ancient Egyptians were of an ethnic group we now call Coptic . Egypt was conquered by the Greeks under Alexander and a great many ethnic greeks moved to the area. Later around 500ad the Arab tribes conquered Egypt. Later still they converted to Islam. Today's Egypitians tend to be an ethnic mixture of all of these groups.
