Iraq has had a history of poor governance while it had one of the strongest and most educated middle classes in the ME. Rarely, if ever, did they try to get a democratic government in place. Rarely, if ever, did they even try to rebel.


Junior tries to compare Iraq under Saddam to some western state. The people of Iraq compared themselves to Syria, or Iran, or Kuwait, or another neighbor. In that comparison they did not see themselves as bad off. Iraq today is much worse off than it was under Saddam.
