Some of us get the goose bumps when it passes by

Yes, some of us do, including me, (actually, I tear up rather than getting goose bumps) but I think it's nuts to either die or kill someone over it. Die for your country, if called upon, but not for a symbol.

Just to put things into proportion, I also think it's nuts to risk death trying to retrieve a dead body. I sure wouldn't do it and I wouldn't want it done for my carcass.

the freedom bought in blood under that flag being carried into battle.

It's been a really long time since this country battled for its freedom and the likelihood of its ever having to do so seems pretty remote. For its interests, yes. And for the freedom of others. But not for its freedom. It's been a long time since anyone marched into battle waving a flag, for that matter. I can't imagine there's an MOS for flag carrier.

it is the symbol of the courage, and willingness to sacrifice one's life for his nation

Cemeteries and memorials exist so we can honor them. Flags are a poor proxy.

I'll tell you what bugs me regarding flags. It's all the "patriots" who have been flying filthy, shredded, tangled flags day and night since 9/11. Seems to me that's more disrespectful than burning them.

Hagihana, re: Long may it wave!! Some of us get the goose bumps when it passes by..

I don't get goose bumps when it passes by. I saw too many people with empty heads, false pride and empty hearts hiding behind it while ten thousand good men a year were dying in Vietnam.

I do get goose bumps when I think about the ideals of freedom, equality, justice, separation of powers, and the rule of law. All of those things underlie the greatness of this Nation. The symbol of this great country should more properly be lady justice standing over the Constitution, its Amendments and the Bill of Rights. Part of the protections she'd be standing above would be the unpopular right to take a piece of cloth and abuse it to make a strong point. Ed
