What if a huge percentage of the population is bed ridden at the same time? The developed world's productivity over last 40-50 years is partly because the internal economy of the family has been replaced by the external exchange of the goods between family and businesses. This is not necessarily more inefficient, but cost calculations by companies and governments have not taken into account these distinctions. See GM's plight.
