I don't know all the stories, but you would be surprised at how many lives have, willingly, been risked to retrieve, and save, that flag. To many of us, it is not "just" a flag.

If people want to make that choice, that's their business. This is like the discussion surrounding Terri Schiavo. People have different ideas about what makes their lives worth living and what is worth dying for. They are all entitled to them as far as I'm concerned. If someone were prepared to die to retrieve a flag, I would try to disabuse him of what I would consider to be a waste of his life. But in the end it's his life and his choice.

The converse is not his choice. He doesn't get to kill someone who is disrespecting that flag. That would be murder.
