I think there is a big difference between a flag destroyed by a terrorist act you describe, and it's deliberate destruction in order to arouse emotion by individuals in a protest.

I was not comparing the two. How any flag came to be under threat is irrelevant to my point.

I was addressing the question of whether or not it's nuts to die or kill for a flag. If you wouldn't risk losing your life to dally over saving the flag in my example, then you're not really willing to die for your flag.

I submit that when people here say they would die for their flag they really mean that they would die for what their flag stands for and are mysteriously conflating the two. I'm trying, along with others here, to get them to recognize it.

>>I believe that you have a perfect right to violently destroy the American flag as a protest; I believe I have a perfect right to violently protect said flag. These men did.<<

If it is their flag, their property, and they wish to violently destroy it as a protest, do you have the right to violently protect it?

On the other hand, I certainly acknowledge that if this were done in a public place, it is possible that some existing laws of that jurisdiction might be violated by such an act. It that were the case, lawfully-appointed authorities might have the duty to stop such an act. But not private citizens. But that is a whole different argument.
