The Jews were definitely homegrown. They lived in Israel and ruled there for many years. But invasions by foreigners, like the Egyptians broke their rule. It is historically possible that the Egyptians took the Jews as slaves back to Egypt. Then the Jews were lead back to Israel by someone called Moses.

What I know about myths is that far more often than not, there is a kernel of truth in them. Some of the fantastical things in the Bible, like the parting of the Red Sea may not be true, but I can imagine the myths that could have come about from a group of Jews who managed to rebel against a civilization such as ancient Egypt and set about wandering in the desert for many years. The kernel of truth may be that these people were Jews who escaped and made their way back to Israel. The myths may be the fantastical things we read that accompanies that story.
