The religious right is a clear and present danger to democracy as we know it. What they want is to dictate morality, censor education, censor media, make strict laws against sexual freedom, get government money flowing into their rightwing churches and schools, and appoint judges who obey their particular mis-reading of the Bible instead of American law. They are also allied with the pro-corporate forces which want big companies to basically run and own everything. and they want more wars, a la Armageddon. This is a Taliban in the making. No different.
