The Navy has been downsizing some for a year.
That should be over.

USNAV is currently 1,500 sailors understrength.

Of course, that CDR may be losing his job for many reasons other than the reduction in force.

KR Re: I know a guy who is in the Navy, CDR rank, great chopper pilot, who will not have a job in 1 months time.

The answer to your question is "needs of the service". There are many factors specific to your friends case of which I have no clue. However:

Services are limited to end strengths both in numbers and in dollar cost. Is there any shortage of Navy senior command-level helo pilots...probably not. Are there shortages of entry level nuggets just out of Pensacola? Probably, tho not so much as Army and Marine helo pilots. UW is right...end strength cuts in the Navy may be the answer. Marines went thru this in late 1980's.

Marines will win the end strength wars because we have two potential sources: The Navy Dept personnel budget which may be soft with the reduction in Navy end strength and, the congressional appropriation process which has historically been kinder to Marines than DoD and President's budget markups.

IMHO, long-term potential is positive for the Army and Marines, too as Gulf War and IF veterans mature and leven the ranks of congress...not as much as it would be following a draft, however.

We are going to have trouble from here on in with the liberal MSM and Dems dragging us down like they did in Vietnam...Dems, NYT, LAT, and WaPo could loose this thing for us yet....selfish elites with no understanding or sense of history.....

Pardon the rant at the end.....jj
