I gave up on tv a long time ago and now just rent a lot of stuff from Netflix.

I generally have a couple of dvds I haven't seen lying around. I finally saw Rashomon after I joined it. Having to watch it with a deadline to return the dvd was kind of intimidating. Needless to say I was floored by it.

I wish television production here had as much quality as BBC productions.

I suspect that the reason for the perceived disparity in quality is the fact that most of the television production in the U.S. is inevitably focused on the bottom line. Given the "public" nature of the BBC and the subsidies that it enjoys, profits are not necessarily the primary driver.

I would also suggest that more U.S. creative efforts are focused on the film industry. I would hazard the guess that the independent film industry in the U.S. trumps the comparable effort in the U.K.
