Ed, if you can compare Al Qaeda to the mob as a "threat", you don't get who we're fighting. The mob just wants to make money; the Islamists want to destroy America and establish a new caliphate. Different game entirely, different goals, different methods. You might find this short article by Pipes on "Distinguishing between Islam and Islamism" useful. Note also the date: 1998. Islamism - the modern political movement - did not start in 2001, or anything like it. danielpipes.org
