It's actually kind of hard to ignore people now.
The first line shows up in the subject listings, and most of the ignored posters never write more than a single line anyway. I much preferred the old incarnation where the posts were only noticed by the missing message number.

Only posts by the Ignored person are filtered. At one time it also automatically filtered posts to the Ignoree, but that was removed.
