We are losing one of the strongest design features of our federated nation: the ability of the 'sovereign' States to act as 'laboratories of Democracy'.

If an all-powerful federal bureaucracy extends it's tentacles into every facit of local affairs (as Thomas' dissent noted: under this broad interpretation of the Commerce Clause, absolutely *everything* becomes subject to federal mandates... 'quilting bees'... 'swap meets', etc.) then our nation will lose much of it's vitality and flexibility... and will have advanced very much further down the road to a centrally-run massive federal Authoritarian bureaucracy.

And, once a nation loses it's freedoms by dipping into *that* well... it is unlikely to be able to climb out.
