Kuwait: Woman appointed as minister for first time in history

For the first time in its history, Kuwait named a female as a cabinet member on Sunday. According to unofficial reports, veteran women's rights activist, Massouma al-Mubarak, was appointed as planning minister. Mubarak, a columnist and political science professor at Kuwait University, replaces Sheikh Ahmad al-Abdullah al-Sabah as planning minister and minister of state for administrative development affairs, one source told Reuters.

Last month, Kuwaiti lawmakers approved political rights for women, clearing the way for females to participate in parliamentary elections for the first time in the Gulf nation's history.
