There are many advocates of increasing the minimum wage. Most union contracts stipulate that an increase in the minimum wage will automatically give the union members a raise. You are correct when you write, "some less skilled people get forced in to unemployment (or in to off the books work) by minimum wage laws, esp. "living wage" laws which require a higher minimum wage."

Some people support minimum wages for compassionate reasons. Others for political or financial gain. I worry about those people that support it knowing the financial ruin it causes to marginal workers.
