>>>If all you wanted was to unseat Saddam, that you could do with a sniper's bullet."<<<
Would that be more dangerous or pointless?

Would more than a thousand Americans die and countless other thousands maimed? Would US spend billions and billions of dollars (and still counting)? Would you be stuck in a hostile land in the rather unappreciated position of an "occupier"?

I don't think so.

There's his sons, his relatives, his henchmen ...

If you think his sons were as much a threat as Saddam, that would mean two more bullets. Forget relatives & henchmen, since none would automatically succeed, since Saddam built his power structure such that there were no successors among them that could command the army and the state.

Besides... msnbc.msn.com

How does Saddam killing 50 Iraqis in 1982 affect any of the above?

Why not set up a democracy in Iraq?

Sure you can try. Not sure if the eventual cost will be worth it for Americans, nor even if a US-friendly government will be achieved in the end of a truly democratic process.

Then again, neither you nor I have a son or a daughter currently dodging bullets in Iraq, so it is easy for us to say "Why not indeed?".

Gotta feed our preference for Suburbans (absolves us of all safe driving responsibility since we all don't have to worry about 1 inch peckers), cheap air flights, and heating oil for the winter with something.

Most honest admission for the real reasons of Iraq's invasion to date. Congratulations :-)

Bush botched even that, though. Wasn't this invasion supposed to give the world cheap oil?
