There is a reason why we haven't built many new power plants since the late 1970's, efficiency is way up.

And France and Germany's double digit unemployment is better than our 5.1%.....

"We could have taken serious steps to reduce our oil dependency"

We did. There is a reason why we haven't built many new power plants since the late 1970's, efficiency is way up. Ever wonder why there haven't been any new refineries built since the early 1970's, yet our imports of refined gasoline hasn't increased much? Now true, we import more refined other products, but that hasn't kept pace with population increases. And there was a lot of research into solar power, wind and other alternative power generation methods. We were pretty serious about cutting our dependence on foreign oil. However, Reagan got elected and all those efforts were history, as it were.

Good point. In fact, we were closing in on the goal. What was it that Reagan did to slow the process? I remember there was a point somewhere in the 80s when fuel economy on cars became less important but I never understood why.
