That's a good way to put it and something I hadn't really thought about. All I can say is, the people who use the flag to demonstrate their ire, are typically people who have confused "my country" with the policies or people running it they strongly disagree with. Defaming the entire country by defaming one of its strongest symbols is simpleminded and usually only gives strength to those you disagree with. As an example; I don't believe the Vietnam war protestors won many converts when they burned the flag. Just the opposite probably happened.
