The importance of greenhouse gasses wasn't understood. Read your past Nature copies. You'll see the progression.

And actually, they were right. There are signs that absent the input of greenhouse gasses we might be heading on the downslope of this interglacial. Still, doubling the amount of gasses required to reverse a glacial period probably runs the risk of overshooting something serious.
