Excellent points CB, having never lived through that period with any sense of awareness, I'm not sure what I would have done to express my displeasure at the policies of our country.

I would like to think I would have had the courage to march along with Martin Luther King, and I would like to think I would have joined people like uw who fought in Vietnam, because, I have heard many first hand stories from veterans which contradict conventional wisdom of the good we were doing there. But, I am not sure I know enough about womens equal pay to render an informed opinion.

I get your points though and can visualize the struggle one might go through in regard to the flag.

If flag burners hate a certain segment of our nation or something a president or important person did they could burn them in effigy, but instead they burn the one thing that symbolizes our nation. When adamant haters of America in, say, the ME wish to convey how they feel about our nation they do both. If flag burners loved our nation and wanted to "make right" all of the perceived, or real "wrongs", one would think they would take that flag and embrace it as their own and tell everyone that would listen that they are taking back their flag.....they would respect it for the symbol it is. They just take that "piece of cloth" that has symbolized our nation, for I don't honestly know how many years....at least 200.....and burn it out of existence as if by doing so they burn away all of the bad things it represents.

By doing this they convey the impression that they hate America.....period.

No......in my mind they hate America and what it symbolizes......and they use flag burning to let everyone know that they do.
