Bushies smear anyone, they'd even smear Jesus Christ. We saw some smearing today against Wes Clark. What Karl Rove knows is that an orchestrated, well-funded smear campaign which the campaign can claim they aren't running (even though of course they are) can do just enough damage in the months before an election to knock the opponent off-message and put him on the defensive. Rove doesn't care how criminally libelous his smear campaigns are. So far they have worked. Until voters and the press reject smear campaigns like Rove's, they will continue using them.

Good question - how can you defend yourself against a smear campaign which is supposedly run by respectable citizens (even though it's not really)? By even acknowledging them you give them free airtime and advertising. But by ignoring them you run a big risk too.

I told Kerry's guy to immediately call a press conference and invite the press to ask any question about John's military record. The Kerry guy said "no way are we going to let those creeps knock us off-message". Well we were both right.

The only good thing is that maybe next time the smear campaign will blow-back into the smearers faces. But it's important to keep defending Kerry and make sure people know how Bush stole that election, possible Diebold corruption notwithstanding.
