Pickens is on the record with his comments. I used him as a proxy for a multiplicity of other sources, all of whom are in general agreement.

Here's the latest from the DOE's Energy Information Agency on Supply, Domestic Production and Imports.

This information is completely in line with Pickens statement.

It shows that U.S. domestic production of "barrels of oil equivalent" amounts to 7.654MMbpd.
BOE imports amount to 12.435MMbpd.
This totals 20.089MMbpd. (Varies from line 19 due to storage level fluctuation).

Thus, 12.435/20.089 = .619 or ~62% of our petroleum consumption comes from foreign sources.
