Could anyone have been more stressed than the man who saw a huge employment lose during his brief stint? Who better to come up with a whizzed up diversionary excuse? Hey, I watched the whole thing; jaw dropped wide open, live on television. If professional demolition was part of the plan, then IMHO it was to save the surrounding neighborhood from a larger crash.
