There is a general feeling that the CDU is too far right. They had a recent high profile defection who is involved with a new party trying to exploit that gap.

Sorry but you are mistaken. You mean Lafontaine, who left the SPD (Social Democratic Party) to team up with Gysi (ex Commie) to form a new party to the left of the left SPD.
