If you have access to the Sundance channel on your cable, the documentary about Chernobyl plays three times in the next week.

PRIPYAT
directed by Nikolaus Geyrhalter

1999 99 MINS Color

Situated five kilometers from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Pripyat was once home to 50,000 people. Today it is a decaying ghost town, lying in the heart of a guarded radioactive zone. Despite official prohibitions, some poor, elderly and homeless still call it home. Austrian filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter presents an eerie and meditative report about living within the shadow of a nuclear disaster, where, despite the bucolic surroundings, drinking the water, eating the local food or breathing the air on a windy day is not a good idea. My recollection is that it's not color but black and white. I also recollect seeing at least one person on a motorcycle but that might be imagination.

The reason I mention motorcycles is that the "proof" that Elena didn't really go to Chernobyl is that "motorcycles are banned" in the area. Well, a lot of stuff is officially illegal there but people do it anyway. Watch the documentary, it's well done.

Sundance isn't free, it's a premium channel. Good if you like indie films.
