I don't have a problem with the historical proof being shaky. I can't remember what I've actually said over the last several years- but I do have quite a bit of doubt about the historical accuracy of the Bible, and of other old documents. So I don't find the proof to be very compelling, but that has nothing to do with the ideas these exemplars of perfection are supposed to have professed. I'm sure there is some truth in old documents, as there is in all writing, but as for nailing down what actually really and truly happened- well that's a Rashomon problem even in terms of current events, much less events recorded long after they happened. Did you think I was asserting that they absolutely existed, or that this was important? I am not. Whether they are actual figures, or fictional, makes absolutely no difference to me, personally, nor does it diminish the relevance of the ideas. I find much that is interesting to contemplate and discuss in the Greek myths, for example- and the reality of the Greek Gods is of no importance (for me) because what is important are the ideas expressed in the Greek myths.

Obviously their existence (Buddha, Jesus) would be very important to people who believe in their existence, but since I am not one of those people, I am untroubled by that aspect of the problem.

Howdy Doody and Bugs have done quite well for themselves via their hollywood careers. The Howdian view could take two courses, one being hypocritical and one being more righteous.

If Howdy wasted his wealth to abuse the trust of good women, bribe politicians, and indulge in rich food he might justify it by calling it his rewards from God. This would be the former view.

If Howdy looked at his wealth as a burdensome responsibility, making sure it was spent for the betterment of creation, that would be the latter view. A burden, because it's like a nearly impossible task.... easier staying lowlier than thou and criticising the rich folk.

Bugs? fogettabottid; he and the good soldier sjvec exist in another dimension. btw, I never got my book. The check must've bounced, since I am lowlier than thou. Can you give me that URL again?
