Is there some kind of plague of flag burning in other parts of the country? Cause I gotta tell you all there hasn't been one here in probably 40 years. Seems there are some real problems that should take precedence over this colossal waste of time.

Michael,

I realize you had a button pushed on the 9/11 issue, but I am pretty sure it was just that Karen took offense to your dismissing the Flag as a mere symbol (a hot button for her).

I would venture that none of the pro-Flag folks in this discussion view 9/11 as anything other than a tragedy. However, many of the pro-Free Speech folks have no understanding or empathy for the position the pro-Flag folks have.

Notice I didn't say 'anti-Flag' or 'anti-Free Speech'. You can be pro-Flag and for Free Speech, but not extend speech to include flag burning.

My father loved the Flag and what it stood for (the Constitution) and fought 2 Wars to defend it. Treating it as an object for ridicule is not what he would have considered free speech.

Now please understand that I don't personally go to the same level on this, but I respect the WW2 generation enough to understand that they feel somewhat different than the 60's generation on the issue of the Flag as a mere symbol.

John
