I have a different view of China. China can become our new bogeyman, if we continue to deal with them as such. However, China right now is in tremendous flux. There is a huge opportunity to get China so tied in with Western and global economics that eventually their gov't will liberalize and they will be a global stabilization factor. However, if we treat them as our enemy and antogonize them at every turn as Bush is doing, then we can expect they will come to see us as their biggest threat.

Do you know what the Chinese PM's first reaction to 9/11 was? He was quoted as saying that if our economy goes down, so will China's. He then went on to say they need to do everything in their power to help us. That is in stark contrast to many of the ME voices who were rejoicing on 9/11.

So China is our friend if we want to develop them into that and they have a lot of warts that need to be addressed. But they are also our enemy, if we want to make them into that. It depends on how we treat them going forward.

The situation in Middle East is much less ambiguous. We have a lot of enemies in the ME and very few friends. Even our so-called friends like Saudi Arabia is our enemy and should be treated with caution.
