Tigerpaw, my main contention is precisely that we need to get away from defined contribution programs because they are unsustainable. Don't believe me? Take a look at company pension plans across the U.S. All of the ones with defined benefit plans are facing big issues and many are facing existential problems as a result.

Defined contribution plans, on the other hand, are self-sustaining. If we combine the good things of today's system (mandatory savings, withdrawals only after a defined retirement age), and then take the best of the other private plans (better asset diversification, higher returns, locked away from politician's greedy hands), then we can get the best of both worlds and everyone will come away a winner.
