I agree with you that mutilation of the dead is an old old practice. But it seems to me practical to train troops to resist superstitious practices (or reactions to superstitious practices) that impede the military, or endanger personnel for reasons that are impractical. Give them a mythos that can only help them- for example; your glorious dead comrades fallen in the field and not retrieved will march with you as you fight, their blood seeps in to the soil and makes it more likely you will win- every piece of soil on which a body rests will always belong to your side- I don't really care what the military instills, or encourages, because esprit de corps is cultivated, and reinforced, after all, as long as it is utilitarian.

Mythos, esprit de corps, team spirit- all can be manipulated. But I think the greater point in all this (for me) is that it should be ok to discuss all this without having people get angry and abusive. That, to me, is a much greater problem on SI then bodies lying around.
