laptop screen is closer to one's eyes than a desktop monitor.

That's a good point. That's one of the reasons I don't like working on laptops.

But it may be corelated. If you have tiny picture, you move closer to the screen. The result is very un-ergonomic work environmet. Good enough for occasional e-mail, but not an 8+ hour work day.
