"A fetus may be scientifically homo-sapien but does it qualify as a person with a soul, and if so at what point? I doubt that we can make a conclusive determination on that."

I have intentionally left the issue of the Soul out of the discussion for the reasons you mentioned. From a strictly materialistic POV the fetus is as much alive and Human as a child, or a teen, or an adult. All humans are by nature also persons.

If it is not possible to determine when a Human being becomes a person, then that is all the more reason to error on the side of life in case you are wrong and actually kill a Person unknowingly. Life begins at conception, therefore it should be considered worthy of protection from that point forward unless there is a compelling reason to act otherwise. A clear and direct threat to the mother's life might reasonably be considered to be an an exception but simple inconvenience; NEVER!
