the situation is too complex for a single graph or small series of graphs to represent it very well.

Of course it is, but then so is almost any real world situation. The point is that you can make some good insite, much better than letting your emotions be your guide. There is even some advantage to picking trends to chart at random, it works like a poll and gives you the big picture from a smaller series of little pictures.
