I agree that philosophical materialism is bereft of the power to assert moral oughts. Fortunately, most materialists are inconsistent in this area and continue to act as though transcendent moral truths actually do exist. There are good theological reasons for this from a Christian perspective (men being created in the image of God, are by nature; personal, rational, and moral creatures and are endowed with certain inalienable rights). As such they can no more deny their moral nature than they can there own person hood or rationality. As well they cannot deny the rights of others without also denying them for themselves. My argument for the equality of the unborn does not require everyone to always do the right thing, only that they should do what is right when presented with the opportunity. That some stood by while there was a genocide in Rwanda in no way justifies genocide as a general method of solving conflicts. Since most people already believe that all Humans have a right to life and liberty all I need to demonstrate is that the unborn are equally Human and therefore deserve equal protection. That is an easy thing to do from a materialistic point of view. The scientific facts are clear and indisputable; Life begins at conception! That the abortion advocates have to play so many word games and denigrate their fellow Human beings through euphemism and lies, shows that it is just a matter of time until they are shamed into doing what is right.

Your raft analogy BTW is not pertinent because most abortions are not done out of a necessity to preserve the lives of the mothers, but simply for convenience. There is plenty of room on the raft and no compelling reason to deny the unborn their rightful spot.
