Sorry,
Japanese Stocks:

Some were:

Japan Tobacco
Autobacs Seven
Makita
Futaba
Asatsu DK
Joyo Bank
Matsumoto Kiyoshi
Nippon Kayaku
Ono Pharma
Riso Kagaku
Santen Pharma
Shimano
Yamatake

Mostly Pharma, consumer goods, not a lot of electric power companies.

Regarding Canadian Oil stuff there were:

Tesco TEO
Compton Petrol CMT
Niko Res.
Talisman Energy

Contrary to my preconceived notions, the hedge funds tended to have an average long holding period of 12-24 months (longer for the energy focused funds).
These guys are pretty much looking for the types of investments you are, though the Japanese picks above are from less aggressive hedgies who will turn down picks that don't meet some fundamental criteria, even if they are promising.

Unfortuneately, I didn't get materials from the fund who was most active in Japan, as many of the other hedge funds were branching into Japan we didn't want a Japan only fund.
