Yes, there are many problems with today's system. However, what kills me is that no one wants to do anything about it. The Democrats have been successful in killing Bush's plans to overhaul social security. So the best we can get now is to tinker with it. I guarantee you, we will not get another President bold enough to champion SS overhaul again until all SS assets are gone in 2042. By then, the transition costs to a self-sustaining program will be even steeper, which will make it even more difficult to sell. So we have a train headed off the cliff and all anyone wants to do is tinker with a few numbers here and there. Disappointing.
