Oswald had purchased in March 1963 an Italian 6.5 mm. Mannlicher-Carcano

I was under the impression that Oswald purchased a bolt action thirty oh six through the mail. He shot Kennedy using sabot rounds, and I think to the surprise of some. I believe the USA law was changed shortly after, where such weapons could not be purchased by mail.
