From time to time SI has been able to get a really good discussion on economic history going. There are people on SI who know a lot about history and finance, including some who are knowledgable on foreign exchange and so forth.

The Poster Formerly Known As Jay Chen, now posting as Tobago Jack, would say (at least in the past) that the US maintains globalization through what he calls the Pax Americana, analogous to the Pax Romana and the Pax Brittanica. China, for many reasons, doesn't appear willing to step in with the Pax Sinensis any time in the foreseeable future.
