"That's the starting for assistants."

According to the Illinois State Board of Education, the median beginning salary for a teacher (not a teacher's assistant) in west central or east central Ill, with only a BA, is $27.4k. With a masters degree, it rises to $30k.

Statewide, the beginning salary RANGE is $20.9k to $41k with a BA and the median varies from $27.5k to $35.1k depending on district size. The 75% of beginning salaries runs between $29.4k and $35.7k depending, again, on district size.

Springfield, to offer a middle Illinois example, appears to start teachers at around $29k, based on the figures given by The Champion - Family Taxpayers Network at www.thechampion.org.

If your district is starting teacher's assistants at $30k, then you might want to elect an entirely new school board. The rest of middle Illinois, if not most of the state, seems to be able to hire new certified teachers, not assistants, for that or less.
