Picks In Semiconductor-Capital Equipment
06.17.05, 9:39 AM ET

In its coverage of semiconductor-capital equipment, Deutsche Bank called May's book-to-bill ratio of 0.85 "encouraging." The May figure was up from 0.81 in April, however, the research firm remained cautious. "After three months at below 0.80 (January through March), the data suggests the industry may be close to an inflection point. However, the underlying bookings and billing data is still tepid, leading us to maintain our cycle view of a meaningful bookings recovery at the end of the year." Deutsche Bank looks for June data to be flat to a modest increase, "with current baseline bookings and billings being as low they are, we anticipate book-to-bill data to be modestly erratic." Looking further ahead, Deutsche Bank sees a possibility of guidance expectations rising. "With the June quarter coming to a close and SEMICON West and earnings period just around the corner, this latest book-to-bill data point and its trend over the past three months could set expectations for higher bookings guidance as key equipment suppliers such as Novellus (nasdaq: NVLS - news - people ), Lam Research (nasdaq: LRCX - news - people ), and KLA-Tencor (nasdaq: KLAC - news - people ) report earnings in July. We believe that bookings outlook for the September quarter could be improving as foundries start to see a recovery in the autumn. However, we believe equipment suppliers will maintain their cautious stance, and any upwards bias in bookings guidance is likely to be modest." Among sector companies, Deutsche Bank has "buy" ratings on Lam, KLA-Tencor, Mattson Technology (nasdaq: MTSN - news - people ) and Applied Materials (nasdaq: AMAT - news - people ).
