Ted, Saving Private Ryan had the lame excuse of trying to give a very real depiction of war. What was the Passion's excuse for showing the very graphic torture of someone?

To show the huge price Jesus paid for our sins.

Are Christian fundamentalists so deficient in imagination they have to see the skin literally fly from a man's body to get that torture is horrific? I can't decide whether Private Ryan's body parts flying around, or the Passion's the flaying of JC's skin was the more offensive. Frankly, I think both were gratuitous examples of violence.
