I think that if you look at the history of groups who protest what they perceive to be grievous wrongs, most of them have some sort of splinter factions that ideologically support at least the concept that damaging property (not human life) is not such a bad thing to achieve their goals.

In Europe, especially in England, the more aggressive tactics taken by animal rights groups seem to have brought animal testing to a near halt much more quickly than more gentle tactics might have. I don't know a lot about this, but would be interested to find out whether this also creates a backlash against the value of no animal testing, or whether all the publicity brings more people over to their position.
