An investigation is much less painful than for an Imperial Bush to say "I was wrong. And ignorant. And playing politics. And infringing on the civil liberties of American citizens. I also kissed off checks and balances in that rag called The US Constitution." Besides, the red state voters are too dumb to read the newspaper.
