The major trend will be when WiMAX becomes mobile. Alvarion is working aggressively on mobile products. They are concentrating on base station designs of various types and sizes: pico, micro, mini, and macro scaled base stations and various combinations of features such as VoIP to PSTN switch and multiple ports. ALVR is considering whether they will develop mobile subscriber units or just OEM them from Nokia, ZTE or other company more experienced in mobile designs.

Between now and a year from now Alvarion should grow at about a 40% rate. The company said they expect yty growth in 2005 to exceed 25%. That means the growth is back loaded in the second half. New products from the interWave acquisition and pre-WiMAX product trials are expected to develop into increased deployments. The early adopters of the fixed to portable version will be likely to deploy the mobile products once those become available. Alvarion and some other suppliers will have mobile base station prior to the launch of Intel's 802.16e mobile version WiMAX SoCs for end user devices.

On the standards front: the 802.16e standard is on schedule for a final vote next month and for approval by IEEE in September. The chairman of the 802.16 group told me that the standard is stable enough for equipment and chip suppliers to do substantial amounts of design work now. Most base station designs are at least partially software programmable so final changes can most likely be accommodated.

The real momentum is far enough away that we might see pull backs through the summer. However, volume has been building and the rumor or a collaboration between Alvarion and Nokia would set the stock moving higher if an agreement is reached. I suspect a better than 60-40 chance of that happening.
