Semi-Equipment Earnings Are 'As Expected' So Far
07.20.05, 3:34 PM ET

Bear Stearns said the earnings season has started off "as expected" for the semiconductor capital-equipment sector. However, front-end equipment companies are reluctant to call the upturn, the research firm said.

Industry fundamentals appear to be at a bottom, with Novellus Systems (nasdaq: NVLS - news - people ) guiding to flat-to-down single digits for orders, revenue and shipments. "The key will be foundry spending, which is unlikely to be included in companies' guidance ranges, but could materialize in the quarter," Bear Stearns said.

The research firm said the decision by Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ) to raise its capital expenditure by $200 million to $5.90 billion is encouraging. Intel "obviously sees strong pull from its customers," Bear Stearns said, adding that 2006 should be a growth year for Intel.

Elsewhere in the sector, Cymer (nasdaq: CYMI - news - people ) and Teradyne (nyse: TER - news - people ) both reported promising second-quarter results. Bear Stearns said Lam Research (nasdaq: LRCX - news - people ) looks like "a very good buying opportunity, in our view." The research firm reiterated "outperform" ratings on Novellus and Lam, and a "peer perform" rating on Teradyne.
