Solon, My immediate reaction is that the father/husband is going on what he believes his wife would have wanted if she were able to speak for herself, which is not really as far-fetched as it may seem. I have discussed these types of cases with other women, and they all have told me that if they were in like situation they would want their infants to have every chance to be born and born healthy and thrive.

Nevertheless, your point is well taken. It all does seem quite ghoulish. It's something I can debate both sides with equal conviction. Another consideration is the enormous expenditure of financial and other medical resources on these endeavors.

BTW, here stateside, the surviving spouse, with few exceptions, always has the final word.
