Just heard on TV from Jeb Bush that they're going to investigate Michael Schaivo. He looked so earnest.

It started when someone posted something along the lines of people who don't graduate college being a lower class than people who do, and in general describing them as if they where poor. I responded something along the lines of "I know a number of people who haven't graduated college and earn $40k to $50 or more." The response to that was that earning $50k "really sucks". It somehow morphed in to the idea of what supporting a family of four on $50k was like, even though I didn't ever specify that I was talking about people who were the sole income for a family of four (for the most part the people I was thinking of either are single, or there is other income in the family). One person said it was "near poverty level", until I pointed out that it was well above the offical poverty level. Someone responded with something like "you don't understand all the real difficulties in life for the working class in America".

I'm with you on this one. $50k/year isn't wealthy (at least in modern American terms, which is a high standard), esp. if you have a family and or live in an expensive area, but it isn't poor, and if you spend your money wisely it isn't "struggleing" either.

Someone mentioned the high housing prices in certain areas and how they couldn't afford to buy a house with $50k. But there is always long commutes, or you could rent. The response to my mentioning renting was that "home ownership is an important part of being middle class in America".
