Gib,

You seem be living in a fantasy world. Real democracies don't engage in Nazi/Soviet tactics in gulags like Gitmo, or the hellholes of Abu Ghraib, Camp Buca and the dozen or so secret detention facilities that are hinted at broadly in the international/independent media.

Furthermore, if this is the attitude that permeates the mainstream media today, and it appears to be the case, then democracy is a goner:

"There are some things the general public does not need to know and shouldn't. I believe democracy flourishes when the government can take legitimate steps to keep its secrets and when the press can decide whether to print what it knows." —Katharine Graham, chairman of the board, The Washington Post Company (inherited after her CIA-sycophant husband Philip "murdered himself" after a bout of remorse about selling out the public to the spooks)
